Knights Work Hard & Finish STRONG
Welcome to John J. Cairns!
John J. Cairns offers a dynamic approach to learning, doing, and thinking that has been changing the lives of learners, educators, and the entire community. Our design components are based on three foundation principles: first, learning must be based on the interests and goals of each learner; second, learner’s curriculum must be relevant to the people and places that exist in the real world; and finally, a learner’s abilities must be authentically measured by the quality of her or his work.
John J. Cairns (JJC) is a California Model Continuation High School and is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). We provide learners with a UC A-G approved coursework, which means that every JJC graduate has the opportunity to meet the requirements for UC or Cal State admission.
We are distinguished by our three pillars:
1. Advisory - Every learner joins an Advisory when they enter JJC. This is a tightly knit cohort of about 15 to 20 learners who work with the same advisor throughout their time at JJC. This provides the space to build a family atmosphere, and allows advisors to understand the learner's interests and needs, which leads to authentically personalized learning for the learner.
2. Internships – Every learner has an internship, which is our "classroom in the community." Internships serve as the basis of career exploration, work experience, and college and career planning. Learners choose internships based on their interests, and develop strong relationships with mentors who are professionals and experts in their field.
3. LTI Project - LTI (Learning Through Internship/Interests), is a key component to our learner's education. Projects are built around and for their LTIs. Each learner is expected to actively pursue and participate in an LTI project each semester. This project ties the internship and real world learning together. This is what makes the learning relevant to each learner.
